The Old Town-Orono YMCA is pausing their competitive gymnastics program as of June 28. I have six granddaughters ages 11 to 30, all of whom have grown up doing gymnastics. Four of them trained at the Old Town-Orono YMCA.

In every case, I have watched the transition from shy children to self-confident young women. As their skills developed, so did their confidence. Beyond the skills and self confidence there are the teammate relationships. I note how many of the older ones are going to weddings and baby showers of former teammates, and the younger ones are forging friendships that will last a lifetime.

Girls have fewer opportunities than boys for this level of athleticism locally, and I would urge the YMCA to continue to provide it for our daughters and granddaughters.
