Kick it old school with these nostalgic activities

WRITTEN BY MARISSA DONOVAN

Thrift shopping and yard-sailing during the summer months can rekindle an appreciation for retro items and activities. Create special memories with your family and friends this summer by building your own nostalgic itinerary with these activities!

Shop a Local Record Store

Maine’s record shops offer the perfect chance to dig through crates of vinyl, hunting for that rare find or your next favorite album. Shops that have an abundance of vintage finds are Dr. Records and The Vinyl Canteen in Bangor, Lizard Dog Records in Orono, and Analog Attic in Castine. Be on the lookout for bargain bins and staff picks to help curate your own collection for the summer. Check each shop’s social media pages for hours of operation and upcoming deals.

Watch a Movie at the Drive-In

Have a night out under the stars at a nostalgic drive-in movie theater, where you can enjoy a new summer blockbuster or classic film from the comfort of your car. Drive-ins worth checking out this summer include Skylite Drive-In in Madawaska, Bridgton Twin Drive-In in Bridgton, Prides Corner Drive-In in Westbrook, and The Saco Drive-In in Saco. Make sure to bring cash for movie tickets and concessions. It’s also a good idea to bring bug spray and to know in advance how to keep your car lights off while the movie is playing. For showtimes and special events happening this summer, follow each drive-in on social media.

Skate at a Roller Rink

Glide across the smooth wooden floors of a classic roller rink this summer with your family and friends. Sunbeam Roller Rink in Smithfield will be open for its 103rd season. Melody Roller Rink in Caribou and Rollerama in Houlton will also be open for you to lace up a pair of skates. Visit each of their Facebook pages for information on summer hours of operation, pricing, and special events.
