A man is believed to be dead after a Sunday house fire in Newfield.

The fire broke out early Sunday morning at the Maintenance Lane home, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The blaze destroyed the two-story home.

The homeowner, 39-year-old Kristofer Whittemore, may have been inside at the time of the fire. A body was found in the rubble, Moss said.

The body was taken to the Maine medical examiner’s office in Augusta for positive identification.

The fire remains under investigation.
