Jellyfish warnings have been increasing along beaches across Maine, prompting officials to warn citizens about safety precautions when seeing one.
Last week, the city of South Portland announced on Facebook that a 5-foot-wide lion’s mane jellyfish had been spotted at Willard Beach on June 23. The next day, the Ogunquit Fire Department made a similar post, mentioning an increase of lion’s mane and moon jellyfish in their waters.
“While most encounters are harmless, we have seen a few instances of jellyfish stings locally,” the Ogunquit Fire Department wrote on Facebook.
Officials say if you come across a jellyfish do not touch it, as they can sting. Also recommended is finding a lifeguard or a beach employee who will help move the jellyfish back into the water.
