Longtime Bangor Daily News cartoonist George Danby will be inducted into the Maine Press Association’s hall of fame this fall.

Danby published his first cartoon in the BDN in 1975 as a student at Bangor High School. He went on to draw for the Providence Journal-Bulletin and the New Haven Register before returning to the BDN in 1985.

Over nearly 40 years, Danby’s daily cartoons have brought clarity, wit and humanity to the BDN’s opinion pages, chronicling Maine’s political and social evolution through nine presidents, seven governors, and countless other public figures, social movements and trends.

His work has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times, Time and USA Today.

This year’s other two hall of fame inductees are photojournalist John Ewing and the late reporter Dennis Hoey, both of the Portland Press Herald.

They will be formally recognized on Oct. 18 during the MPA’s annual conference in South Portland.
