When life gives you blueberries, make mojitos.

This isn’t just your typical mint-and-lime combination — it’s a celebration of summertime in Maine.

Maine’s wild blueberries are smaller, more intense and flavorful compared with those that are cultivated. These tiny fruits are grown in acidic soils, giving them a tartness that’s perfect for a mojito’s standard sweetness.

This recipe transforms a traditional Cuban classic into something uniquely Maine. Serve it at summer gatherings, barbeques or simply on your porch while watching the sunset.

— Use a rocks glass or highball glass (10-12 oz), and start with about ¼ cup of fresh Maine blueberries per drink.

— Muddle the blueberries with 8-10 fresh mint leaves. Muddling these together releases their flavors and creates colorful streaks that will distribute throughout your drink.

— Once you have berries in your glass add a teaspoon of sugar.

— Add half an ounce of lime juice and two ounces of white rum – Bacardi Superior is my recommendation, or try flavored white rum like Bacardi Dragonberry. Fill the glass with ice, then top with club soda, whole blueberries and crushed mint leaves.

It pairs well with lobster rolls, grilled seafood or fresh corn on the cob.

So, this summer, skip the ordinary mojito. Pick some wild blueberries and create something fun and uncommon. Your taste buds – and your guests – will thank you.
