The city of South Portland closed a beach to swimming on Friday after a fin was seen in the water.

“Out of an abundance of caution, Willard Beach is closed to swimming this afternoon after a fin was spotted off shore near the SMCC end of the beach,” the city’s parks and recreation department wrote on Facebook.

The sighting comes at a time when sharks have been increasingly present in Maine’s coastal waters, with recent sightings in Ogunquit, Scarborough and Boothbay. In June a 5-foot lion’s mane jellyfish washed ashore at Willard Beach.
