Three men showed up in ski masks to a Waldo County woman’s home Thursday afternoon and shot her.

The trio drove up to the Bailey Road home of 40-year-old Astin Elwell of Knox about 4:25 p.m., and when she answered the door, one of them shot her, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The men then fled in a Jeep Cherokee, which police later found at a nearby home, Moss said Friday morning.

The three men remain at large.

Elwell was taken to MaineHealth Waldo General Hospital in Belfast before being transferred to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Her injuries aren’t considered life-threatening, according to Moss.

Moss said that police believe this was an “isolated incident” and that there’s no threat to the general public.

The investigation is ongoing.
