A man allegedly shot at police while leading them on a chase through three Maine communities.
Dustin Smith, 33, has several other charges pending against him, according to Chief Deputy J. Chris Read of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.
On Sunday, Deputy Elijah Curtis tried to stop Smith, who was wanted on felony arrest warrants, on Hallowell Road in Chelsea, Read said Monday morning.
But Smith allegedly refused to stop and fled, leading Curtis on a chase. Deputy Jeffrey Boudreau joined the chase, with Smith leading them through Chelsea, Windsor and Augusta.
During the chase, Smith allegedly shot at his pursuers several times.
Smith finally came to a stop outside an Allen Street home in Augusta, where he got out of the vehicle and pointed a gun at police, according to Read.
Curtis and Boudreau shot at Smith, with one bullet grazing his arm. Augusta Police Officer Ben Murtiff pinned Smith’s vehicle in the driveway to keep him from fleeing again.
Smith was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center before being moved to the Kennebec County Jail. His passenger, 29-year-old Kierra Stoddard, also was arrested and charged with resisting arrest.
Curtis and Boudreau have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure. The Maine attorney general’s office is investigating, which is standard procedure any time Maine law enforcement use deadly force.
