A fire at a self-storage facility damaged five or six units Friday morning in Bangor.

The blaze broke out around 11 a.m. and Bangor firefighters could see smoke as they approached Bangor Self Storage at 1286 Union St., Deputy Fire Chief Eric Pelletier said.

Crews had the fire under control around 11:30 a.m.

Additional units in the building have smoke damage, Pelletier said. The third of four buildings burned.

The cause of the fire is unknown and the State Fire Marshal has been called, Pelletier said.

Crews had to cut their way into all of the locked units, which can delay firefighting efforts, Pelletier said. People store everything from cars to bedsheets, which presents a challenge as well, he said.

Firefighters are working to salvage what they can from the building, Pelletier said.

Union Street just past Griffin Road is closed and drivers are being detoured on Randolph Drive. Union Street will be reopened as soon as possible, Pelletier said.
