This year, the president and the top federal government officials have displayed character of a remarkable sort — violating laws and court orders, degrading women, presenting ” alternative facts” as truths, neglecting those needing assistance with food or health care, blaming others for their own failures and threatening anyone who would take issue with their actions.
“Good character” is something quite different. The hallmarks of maturity include honesty, empathy, respect for people and institutions, taking responsibility for one’s actions, possessing a working moral compass and the courage to act as that compass directs, even when it’s personally costly.
A big part of growing up is learning that interest and care for others is often more important than doing whatever you want to do. It seems the nation’s current leaders have not learned that lesson. In their state of moral disability they cannot serve as wholesome role models.
For the wellbeing of the nation, and particularly for our young citizens, it is important that we celebrate and emulate real grown ups, wherever we encounter them. Character matters.
