A Monday evening fire destroyed a Trenton home filled with 20,000 books.

The fire broke out about 6:31 p.m. at the Pressey Lane home, according to the Trenton Volunteer Fire Department.

When they arrived, firefighters encountered heavy flames. Not long into the fight, the home’s second floor collapsed, along with part of the roof, the fire department said Tuesday morning.

The home contained approximately 20,000 books and a large vinyl collection, which fueled the fire’s intensity.

Ultimately, firefighters determined they needed to use an excavator to open the home in order to get to the heart of the blaze and extinguish it safely.

The home was a total loss.

Investigators believe the fire was started when embers from a woodstove burned a nearby couch.

The homeowner escaped the blaze without injury. One firefighter was taken to the hospital after suffering a concussion and neck and back injuries when the second floor collapsed.

The investigation is ongoing.
