The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team defeated No. 15 Brown University, 3 to 2, Tuesday at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.
Isabelle Michaud, Sade Sandilands and Ava Stevenson were the goal scorers in Maine’s victory.
Michaud kicked off the scoring with an early goal to give Maine the lead.
Michaud’s unassisted goal was her fifth of the season as she leads the Black Bears in goals and points. Near the end of the first period, Sandilands scored a top-shelf goal for her second of the season. Sandilands’ goal was assisted by Raegan Wurm and Lila Shea.
Two minutes into the second period, senior Stevenson scored a powerplay goal to widen Maine’s lead. Rookies Mackenzie Podewell and Lulu Rucinski tallied assists.
Maine held a three goal lead heading into the third period, before Brown was able to sneak in two powerplay goals in the final frame. The Black Bears were able to hold off the Brown Bears for a 3-2 win.
Madisyn Ryan saw her second career start in goal for Maine, earning her second career win. Ryan stopped 23 saves on 25 shots faced (.920 sv %).
Maine was 1/3 on the powerplay. Maine outshot Brown 29-25.
Stevenson scored her first powerplay goal of her career. Tuesday night’s game was Maine’s ninth against a ranked opponent this season and second win against a ranked opponent.
The win was the team’s 12th ranked win under Coach Molly Engstrom.
