Maine Sen. Joe Baldacci on Friday shed more light on a potential run for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, saying he will make an announcement about it next week, the Portland Press Herald reported.
Baldacci had been considering a bid for the seat currently held by outgoing Democratic Rep. Jared Golden. He told the Press Herald on Friday that he is “actively working on it, talking to people and putting together a winning team, but the final decision will come later next week.”
Baldacci told the Press Herald the final call came down to his family.
“They have generally given me the go-ahead. We’re in the final stages of getting this done,” he said.
Golden, who is serving his fourth term, announced in November that he will not seek reelection in 2026.
Baldacci would join a field of three other candidates for the Democratic nomination, including State Auditor Matt Dunlap, who has been endorsed by former 2nd District Rep. Mike Michaud; Jordan Wood, a former political operative who jumped races from a competitive field of candidates seeking to oust Sen. Susan Collins; and Paige Loud, a social worker.
On the Republican side, former Maine Gov. Paul LePage is the overwhelming favorite in a primary with political newcomer James Clark.
Correction: This story has been updated to clarify that Baldacci has not yet said whether he is running.
