The recent changes in postmark rules will not affect absentee voting in Maine. In Maine, postmarks don’t matter as no matter how the ballot gets there, it must be delivered to the voting place by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
The issue here is how quickly the Post Office handles the ballot.
I believe Congress needs to act quickly, in a non-partisan way, to put into law a rule that properly marked absentee ballots must receive the highest level of expedited processing.
On Election Day in our town election officials always check with the postmaster after the last mail delivery of the day to make sure that there are no ballots remaining in the post office.
