University of Maine hockey freshman left winger Justin Poirier has been nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, which goes to college hockey’s top Division I men’s player.
He is one of 87 players representing 48 Division I schools.
He has 17 goals and 11 assists in 23 games and has had eight multi-point games.
He leads the Black Bears in goals, points, power play goals (7) and shots on goal (89).
His 17 goals are fifth most in the country and the most among freshmen. His .74 goals per game are also fifth best in the country.
His 1.22 points per game is 20th among players at 63 Division 1 schools.
His seven power play goals tie him for fifth.
“He knows how to get himself open and when you can release your shot from different angles and different places on the ice, a lot of times the goalie doesn’t even react to the shot,” UMaine head coach Ben Barr said in December. “It either goes in, hits the goalie, or hits the pipe. That is such a weapon as a player.”
Fans can cast their vote by going to the voting website hobeybaker.com/vote. Fans can find their favorite player, then text to vote by following the instructions. Fans can select from this year’s 87 players.
There will then be a second phase of fan balloting coming from the list of Top Ten Hobey Baker finalists beginning March 18 and closing March 29. The Hobey Hat Trick will then be announced on April 2 with the winner to be awarded during the 2026 Frozen Four on April 10 in Las Vegas.
