A plane carrying eight people crashed at Bangor International Airport during a snowstorm on Sunday night, a federal official said.

The Bombardier Challenger 600 crashed as it was taking off at around 7:45 p.m., a spokesperson from the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The status of the eight people on board is unknown.

The airport was closed and flights were canceled as officials urged people to avoid the area.

A Bangor Police spokesman at around 10:30 p.m. said first responders were expecting to work for several more hours before they would have an update.

The crash came during a heavy winter storm, with temperatures in the single digits on Sunday night.

The National Transportation Safety Board is aware of an airplane crash at the airport, a spokesperson confirmed Sunday night.

The FAA and NTSB will investigate the crash, the FAA spokesperson said.
