The hypocrisy of President Donald Trump’s international declarations of bringing peace to the world, and at the same time condoning a military assault on his own country’s unarmed citizens, is glaring.
In the past, our government abided by the Constitution. Most leaders had a moral compass and were role models. Congress was a working body that represented all the people and found ways to come to consensus.
Today’s Supreme Court is no longer supreme. Its rulings have upended the checks and balances that define governing and are the foundation of our democracy. This court also refused to set ethical guidelines for its judges (the only federal institution that has none).
As citizens, now is not the time to “throw away your shot.” To be indifferent now — to not stand up for the rule of law — is a gift of silence to Trump. It allows his self-aggrandizement and cruelty to those less fortunate go unchecked.
Now is the time to speak up, work together, and take action: Food pantries, community after-school programs, housing assistance, and medical support are ways to reach out to others.
Community patrollers and observers add safety to neighborhoods. Legal aid groups need people to clarify law and represent those in need.
Vote, encourage others to vote and register new voters. Voting is our ultimate super power in fair elections.
Connect with others, protect each other, be emboldened. Be a part of reclaiming a state of the union where your family would proudly want to live.
