The body of a 25-year-old man was recovered from the ocean near Bar Island at Acadia National Park, Thursday morning.
The man, who has not been identified, had been missing since Wednesday afternoon.
A search involving multiple agencies started at about 5 p.m. Wednesday after the Bar Harbor Police Department reported that a person was believed to be stranded on the island, which is connected to the mainland at low tide.
Responders were not able to find the person and continued to search overnight, park spokesperson Amanda Pollock said on Thursday.
The man was found dead late Thursday morning, Pollock said.
The National Park Service is leading the investigation into the fatality, and will not be releasing additional information until 72 hours after his next-of-kin have been notified, Pollock said.
The Bar Harbor Story reported that the man’s cell phone sent a pin from the island.
Two women told the Bar Harbor Story that they’d heard yells for help late Wednesday afternoon and had hollered back that help was on the way before contacting emergency services around 5 p.m.
