John Bapst Memorial High School on Thursday announced its new head of school.

Dr. Sally Maxwell will take the helm at the Bangor prep school on July 1, succeeding Interim Head of School Jay Brennan.

Maxwell has more than three decades of experience in education. She started her career in public education in 1994 and later served in senior leadership roles at independent schools in Philadelphia, Seattle, and St. Louis, according to John Bapst.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from Tulane University, a master’s in education and social policy from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in teaching, learning and curriculum from the University of Pennsylvania.

Maxwell’s appointment comes after a national search by the school’s board of trustees.

Board Chair Daniel LaMontagne said Maxwell “demonstrated a rare combination of strategic clarity, relational leadership, and a deep understanding of what it means to serve as both the educational and community leader of a school like John Bapst.”

Ethan Andrews is the night editor. He was formerly the managing editor at The Free Press and worked as a reporter for The Republican Journal and Pen Bay Pilot.
