The Williams Park playground on Bangor’s east side is set to be replaced this year, according to the city’s parks and recreation director.
The new structure will replace one that has been in place for 15 years at the park on the corner of Newbury and Hancock streets.
“It’s going to be a pretty cool project for folks and we’re hopeful that once it’s done, the neighbors will enjoy it for years to come,” Bangor Parks and Recreation Director Tracy Willette said.
City staff are hoping to install the new playground by late spring or early summer, although it’s too early to know for sure, according to Willette.
When it’s finished, nearby residents will have a playground system designed for 5- to 12-year-olds, a structure for 2- to 5-year-olds and new swing sets. The city is looking for a playground with multiple slides and climbing structures, as well as sensory elements like an auditory panel that visitors can use to make musical sounds.
The new playground is a “fairly ambitious project” and will be similar to the one installed at Hayford Park in 2021, according to Willette.
The city is accepting proposals from contractors for the project.
The budget for the playground replacement is $233,000 and will be funded by a community development block grant, Willette said.
“We’re hopeful that we can have something really exciting and unique for the neighborhood,” he said.
