A New York man died Saturday night after police shot him in Skowhegan. Police say he shot a gun in the air then pointed it in the direction of officers.
Kenneth Ortega, 30, allegedly brandished a gun and then pointed it at police at Redington-Fairview General Hospital before a Skowhegan police officer shot him, according to Chief David Bucknam.
Ortega died from his injuries.
The officer who shot him has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol whenever an officer uses deadly force.
The Maine attorney general’s office will investigate, which is standard procedure whenever a Maine law enforcement officer uses deadly force.
