A man has died after he was severely burned Thursday afternoon in an Augusta house fire.
The fire broke out about 2:03 p.m. in the basement of a Riverside Drive home, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
When firefighters arrived, they found 66-year-old Michael Keith with severe burns outside the home, Moss said Friday afternoon.
He was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta before being flown to Maine Maine Center in Portland, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators believe the fire started when flammable liquid ignited near a chimney cleanout door. The fire was accidental.
The investigation is ongoing.
