We’ve all been applauding Sen. Susan Collins’ efforts for ending ICE involvement in Maine. On Jan. 29, Collins announced that federal immigration officials agreed to end “enhanced” large-scale ICE operations in Maine, following her discussions with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
But just weeks after that announcement, we’ve had continuing immigration incidents. A bus load carrying people going to work in Skowhegan was pulled over by U.S. Border Patrol. Seventeen people were taken to a detention facility for processing and, potentially, for removal. And this past Saturday morning at the Rock Church in Scarborough, ICE reportedly detained an asylum seeker driving in their car who was taken to an ICE facility located on Manson-Libby Road in Scarborough.
How many have been taken that we’ve not heard about? How cruel is ICE? They call grabbing working Mainers “Catch Of The Day.”
What is Collins talking about? Maybe she needs to revisit her efforts with chief of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. Mainers’ safety is more important than trying to score points for a re-election campaign. It seems Collins is taking advantage of the serious situation here by using her influence to try to convince voters that it’s her efforts that are keeping ICE out of Maine. That doesn’t seem to be true
