Lawrence High School of Fairfield’s Maddie Provost, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln’s Addison Cyr, Penobscot Valley of Howland’s Brooklynn Raymond and Wisdom of St. Agatha’s Ava Lerman each led their respective schools to North regional basketball championships.
And now, each of them has been named the recipients of the Owen Osborne Award, which is given to the regional tournament’s most valuable player in each class.
The award was established in 1994 and is named in honor of the late Bangor Daily News sports editor and columnist.
Class B North MVP Provost, Class C choice Cyr and Class S pick Lerman are seniors while Class D selection Raymond is a junior.
Cyr was named to the All-Class C North team for the third consecutive season and this is Raymond and Lerman’s second straight selection, although Penobscot Valley was in Class C a year ago and Wisdom was in Class D. Both teams dropped a class this season as part of a statewide reclassification.
Provost was joined on the B North all-tourney team by senior teammate Ashley Shores, Gardiner High School freshman Alexa Quintana and sophomore Molly Takatsu and Ellsworth High senior Kaylee Bagley.
Accompanying Cyr on the C North team were senior teammate Megan House, Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft sophomore Nola Mason and senior Kassidy Lebel, and Caribou sophomore Quinn Corrigan.
Raymond had two Howlers teammates with her on the D all-tourney team in seniors Rylee Moulton and Lila Cummings along with Machias sophomore Loretta Richardson and Bangor Christian’s Mary Allen.
Lerman and junior Madi Cyr were the Wisdom representatives on the Class S team along with Katadhin of Stacyville senior Ayanna Lester and freshman Polly Cullen and Jonesport-Beals senior Mia Mills.
Class B
The dynamic guard Provost poured in an average of 24.7 points per game in her three tournament games and also produced 5.7 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 3 steals per game in leading the Bulldogs to the regional title. She had 27 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the championship game win over Gardiner.
She also had a crucial steal and layup with 1:27 left in the 47-42 semifinal win over Ellsworth.
The hard-working Shores complemented her nicely with 21.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game and, like Provost, had a big game in the final with 29 points, five rebounds, seven assists and a pair of steals.
Takatsu and Quintana led the youthful Tigers to a runnerup finish. Takatsu provided Gardiner with 9.7 points, 7 rebounds and 5.3 assists each game and Quintana was good for 10.3 points and 4.3 rebounds.
Bagley capped her impressive career with 18 and 16-point tourney games and she averaged four rebounds.
Class C
Cyr again dominated the glass for the Lynx by averaging 10.7 rebounds and 4 blocked shots per game to go with her 17.7 points.
She had 15 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and four blocked shots in the regional championship game’s 41-22 win over Foxcroft Academy.
Influential point guard House also averaged 17.7 points and handed out 5.3 assists while making two steals per contest. House blocked four shots in the three games and averaged 2.2 rebounds. She was also a difference-maker in the title game with 17 points and four steals.
House was also an All-Class C North choice last season.
Lebel and Mason sparked Foxcroft Academy to their regional runner-up finish with Lebel’s 10.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game and Mason’s 8.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals leading the way.
Corrigan had an outstanding two games for the Vikings with her 17.5 points, 4 assists, 3.3 steals and 3 rebounds per-game average. She had 17 of her 22 points in the second half to lead Caribou to a come-from-behind 43-40 overtime win over Dexter.
She was an honorable mention a year ago.
Class D
Raymond had an exceptional all-around North tourney for Penobscot Valley and saved her best for last with 19 points, five assists, four steals and four rebounds in the 53-37 championship game win over Machias.
She had 10 points and 10 rebounds along with four steals and two assists in the 52-37 upset win over previously unbeaten Bangor Christian in the semifinals, and she finished the tourney averaging 13 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3 steals.
Moulton, the Class C MVP a year ago, also averaged 13 points along with 5 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals.
Raymond and Moulton were top-notch defenders in the regional action, as was Cummings.
Cummings controlled the boards while also pitching in 12 points in each of PVHS’s three wins. She averaged 7.7 rebounds and also dished out 3.3 assists. Another imposing defender, she averaged 2 steals per game.
Cummings was an honorable mention in 2023-24.
Richardson was a catalyst for Machias’ run to the championship game with her 16.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest. She also handed out 3.3 assists and 2 steals per game.
Allen concluded her brilliant career with a 42-point game for Bangor Christian in the quarterfinals, and added 18 more in the loss to Penobscot Valley in the semis. She also averaged 3.5 rebounds and 3 assists per game.
She was an honorable mention in the 2022-23 season.
Class S
Standout point guard Lerman carried the Pioneers to their first regional title since the 1997-98 season with offensive outputs of 41, 17 and 21 points for an average of 26.3 points per contest. She also had 4.3 steals per game to go with 3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists.
She had 21 points, six steals, three rebounds and two assists in the 41-26 championship game win over Katahdin.
Cyr complemented her by registering 7.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
Lester and Cullen powered Katahdin to its runnerup finish thanks to their strong inside games.
Lester, an honorable mention in 2023-24, averaged 10.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game along with 2.7 blocks and the tireless and tenacious Cullen produced 9 points, 8.7 rebounds, 5 steals and 4.3 assists per contest.
Mills, an honorable mention in 2023-24, concluded her outstanding career with a tournament stretch that included a 26-point game in a win over Deer Isle-Stonington. She wound up averaging 15.5 points, 7 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2 assists.
