A Windham man has been charged after a Tuesday crash that left a dog dead.

Brandon Michael Gross, 35, has been charged with aggravated driving to endanger, eluding an officer, aggravated cruelty to animals, and violating his conditions of release and probation, according to the Westbrook Police Department.

Gross was allegedly driving a white pickup truck erratically on Spring Street, near the intersection with County Road, in Westbrook about 2:21 p.m., when he went off the road before then taking off.

Officers later tried to pull over Gross on Spring Street, but he allegedly didn’t stop, passed vehicles and nearly collided with a Westbrook police cruiser before rear-ending a semi truck and rolling over.

Gross was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

A small dog in the truck with him was “grievously injured” and taken to an emergency veterinary clinic. The dog succumbed to its injuries.

At the time of the crash, Gross was on probation for a drug trafficking conviction and out on bail for domestic violence and obstructing charges.

The crash remains under investigation.
