The Internal Revenue Service has filed a $321,867 tax lien against Regional School Unit 13.

RSU 13 Business Manager Katherine Hunt said this is the result of payroll errors made before she arrived in 2023. Hunt said the school district’s lawyers are working on the matter.

Nearly $300,000 of the lien is for the tax period ending in December 2019. Another $10,188 was for the tax period ending June 2023. And another about $11,000 for the tax period ending in 2024.

According to the IRS, the lien is for errors on W2 and 1099 federal tax reporting forms and later for errors in withholding of federal income taxes, Medicare taxes, and Social Security taxes.

RSU 13 comprises municipal schools in Cushing, Owls Head, Rockland, Thomaston and South Thomaston.

Hunt said she does not believe the district owes that amount of money to the IRS but said lawyers are researching the matter.

The lien was filed Monday at the Knox County Registry of Deeds.

The district has payroll and benefits that exceed $30 million annually. The lien amounts to about 1% of the district’s annual payroll and benefits.
