A local couple will sell empanadas, fish fritters and fresh juices at Belfast City Park’s concession stand this summer.
Joshua & Dakota’s Cantina, run by Joshua Kumrits and Dakota Danner, of Belfast, will serve Puerto Rican and Paraguayan food.
“These recipes are all homemade from scratch and passed down from generation to generation,” Danner told the Belfast City Council at its Tuesday meeting.
The stand will also offer ice cream, burgers and hot dogs, she said.
It will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, Kumrits said.
The council voted unanimously to award the concession to Kumrits and Danner at its meeting on Tuesday.
The stand could open as soon as early June and run through Labor Day, according to the city. The city will charge $200 per month in rent, according to City Manager Erin Herbig.
Kumrits has been cooking on boats for four years. He and Danner currently offer catering, take out and delivery from their home kitchen, Kumrits said.
The proposal from Kumrits and Danner was one of three received by the city, a document from the city clerk shows.
The park’s concession stand did not open last summer because the business selected to run it backed out at the last minute, said Herbig.
The concession is for two years, from May 1, 2026, through September 2027.
Belfast City Park is the city’s oldest and has many amenities including a swimming pool, a playground and tennis and pickle ball courts.
