The University of Maine is planning to raise tuition for the upcoming school year.
The Portland Press Herald reported that administrators plan to propose a 3.9% tuition hike for in-state students, raising the cost for Mainers to go to the state’s public flagship university to $13,230 before other fees. Out-of-state students would see a 4% increase, bringing their annual cost to $38,340.
That comes as UMaine faces an $18 million budget shortfall for the coming year. Administrators plan to close that gap, in addition to the tuition hike, with $5.6 million in permanent cuts and another $5.7 million in one-time cuts, as well tap its reserves and a stimulus from Augusta, according to the Press Herald, which obtained a draft slideshow laying out the proposal.
The plan will be presented next week to the university’s budget committee, the newspaper reported.
