A popular supermarket chain officially opened its first location in Maine on Thursday.
A ribbon cutting was held at 8:45 a.m. for the state’s first Aldi. The opening featured a coffee station from 7-11 a.m., and there was a giveaway for the first 200 customers.
The store moved into the former Big Lots store in Portland’s Pine Tree Shopping Center on Brighton Avenue.
The Aldi store will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Aldi operates almost 2,600 stores in the U.S., and Maine is the 40th state the chain operates in.
The company announced plans in 2024 to add 800 new stores as part of a $9 billion expansion.
