As our president unleashes an unprovoked blitzkrieg upon Iran, based on “a feeling” and not any intelligence about hostile intent, I believe Americans must continue to nonviolently resist. As people question why President Donald Trump attacked a sovereign country, violating international law and the UN Charter, they should recall our 2003 unjust invasion of Iraq. False assertions about Saddam Hussein’s possession of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) resulted in more than 400,000 Iraqi and more than 4,000 U.S. servicemen and -women dead.
I believe Trump’s act of aggression stems from one malady: his lifelong pursuit of personal domination of others and self-glorification. White House adviser Stephen Miller enlarged it inhumanely to a foreign policy based on “strength, power, and force.” And when Trump speaks of bombing as “fun,” in which the military bombs “our little hearts out,” promising to “unleash hell,” voters should realize the consequences of electing a convicted criminal who incited an insurrection and kept top-secret documents.
The will to power is merciless in the hands of this authoritarian personality unrestrained by fellow Republicans like Sen. Collins. So should not members of our military avoid obeying illegal orders to attack a country not presenting an imminent threat? I believe Trump cares about Iranian casualties as he does about former FBI Director Robert Mueller’s passing.
