A Milford child died of hypothermia, state officials said.

One-year-old Eleanora Ray McLaughlin died Dec. 28 at a home in Milford. She died of hypothermia, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner spokesperson Lindsey Chasteen said Friday morning.

Eleanora’s manner of death is classified as an accident, Chasteen said. There are five categories for manner of death: natural, accident, suicide, homicide and undetermined.

These are the first new public details about what happened to the child. Eleanora’s mom waited more than three months to find out how her child died despite the medical examiner’s office estimating it would have an update by the end of February.

Maine State Police is investigating the death, spokesperson Shannon Moss said Friday.

State police investigate the deaths of all children 3 and younger, as required by state law.
