A man died Thursday after becoming trapped in a Westfield house fire.

The fire broke out at the Houlton Road home about 3:38 p.m., according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Family told firefighters that one person remained trapped in the burning home.

Rescuers spent the afternoon and evening searching for the missing person and eventually found him within the burned remains of the home, Moss said Friday morning.

The body was taken to the Maine medical examiner’s office in Augusta for an autopsy to positively identify him and determine his cause and manner of death.

Investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal believe the fire started around the barn but the cause has not yet been determined.

An investigator remained at the scene Friday morning, but told a reporter he could not share any additional information.

A family member declined to comment and asked the public to respect their privacy.

Westfield is west of Mars Hill in Aroostook County.
