LEWISTON, Maine — A reported gunman sent Bates College and the surrounding community into a brief lockdown Thursday afternoon.
The college’s shelter in place order was lifted, but similar orders were given for nearby hospitals and public schools.
Students at Bates received texts from the college to shelter in place around 3:40 p.m.
Local hospitals and schools were also sheltering in place, including Lewiston Public Schools and Central Maine Medical Center, which was on a “modified lockdown.”
Lewiston Public Schools Superintendent Jake Langlais says they locked down their campus and events out of caution and sent students home.
Around 6 p.m., police were seen walking around a house on Mountain Avenue, off of College Street near Bates, before searching the woods.
Lewiston police have not provided any more information about the situation.
