A thief stole a statue of the Virgin Mary from a sanctuary in Grand Isle last month.
The three-foot statue, along with a four-foot angel and a nine-inch cherub, was reported stolen from Mizpah on Aug. 27, according to the Maine State Police.
Mizpah, 150-acre nature sanctuary on Doucette Road, was founded in 1991 by Richard Corbin, who had been diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin lymphoma when he was 22 years old. It offers people with terminal illnesses and substance use disorder a place to find peace and solace.

Between 5,000 and 6,000 people visit Mizpah every year. Only about 300 people live in Grand Isle year-round.
