A 13-year-old boy was killed and two others seriously injured when they were hit by a car near 512 Warren Ave. in Portland Saturday night.
The crash happened at about 8:45 p.m., when a group of teenage boys was walking on the north side of Warren Avenue towards Riverside Street near the I-95 overpass, according to Portland police.
A vehicle driven by a 48-year-old Portland man was traveling in the same direction.
The initial investigation found the boys “entered the roadway abruptly and were then struck by the vehicle,” according to a press release.
Two boys, aged 14 and 15, were taken to Maine Medical Center, where they are listed as having serious but not life-threatening injuries, police said.
Other juveniles were walking in the group but were not injured.
Police said the driver remained at the scene of the crash and is cooperating with the investigation. He was also transported to Maine Medical Center for evaluation with non-life-threatening injuries.
The area where the crash occurred was closed for about five hours.
Portland police were assisted on scene by members of the department’s crash reconstruction team, the Portland Fire Department and a representative from the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office.
The Superintendent’s Office from Portland Public Schools also assisted officers.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, has information about the investigation, or may have surveillance, dashcam, doorbell, or other video from the area at the time of the crash to contact investigators at 207-874-8575.
