With just over six weeks until election day, U.S. Sen. Angus King of Maine is among those urging voters to show up at the polls in large numbers and to be vigilant in the face of potential suppression efforts by the Trump administration.
King said the president continues to claim, without justification, that widespread fraud is taking place.
At the same time, King said Trump has raised concerns about foreign interference while firing a third of the staff that work to defend against it.
“This administration has gutted CISA, the agency of DHS that’s designed to defend the integrity of our election system from cyberattack and hacking and now they’re complaining about the danger of foreign interference. It’s hypocritical in the extreme,” he says.
There is no evidence that any foreign nation altered election results in 2020. And even if there were a national security threat, the president does not have the power to change rules for federal elections.
