A boat ramp at the end of a road in the Down East town of Roque Bluffs where a woman and her two grandchildren were found dead in a submerged vehicle over the weekend is now blocked by a temporary barrier, WABI reported.
Sharon Bukulmez, 61, and her two grandchildren, 5-year-old Kinsley and 3-year-old Sawyer Grubb, were found dead Sunday morning in Pond Cove near the boat ramp at the end of Schoppee Point Road.
The three had left a family wedding in Jonesboro around 8:30 p.m. Saturday headed for Machias but didn’t arrive as expected.
In the days since, locals have expressed frustration over danger of the boat ramp, which amounts to the roadway continuing directly into the water.
Last weekend’s deaths weren’t the first at that boat ramp, which is near Roque Bluffs State Park. Two women, one of whom was 5 months pregnant, drowned in 2013 after their minivan went off the same boat ramp on a foggy, rainy July evening.
