Bucksport has a new deputy police chief, the latest appointment in a handful of recent staffing changes in its public safety departments.
The Town Council appointed Daniel Harlan, a sergeant who’s worked for the town for 15 years in total, to the role Thursday.
“No question in my mind he’s the right man for the job,” Town Manager Jacob Gran said. “We have, or will have, three very fine gentlemen in our public safety leadership positions, and I look forward to seeing what they accomplish together.”
Bucksport’s three public safety leaders are its deputy fire chief, deputy police chief and public safety director, who oversees the town’s in-house police and fire departments. Public Safety Director David Winchester was appointed in September. Deputy Fire Chief Michael Denning has held his position for decades and plans to retire at the end of the year.
The town’s public safety director, Sean Geagan, retired from that role in July after 37 years to become coordinator of student behavior and school safety at the local school district, RSU 25.
After evaluating its staffing structure amid budget conversations, the town decided to keep the public safety director position and appointed deputy police chief David Winchester in September.
Harlan was previously an officer in Bucksport, became a sergeant with Hancock County and then moved to become a patrolman in Brewer in February 2024, the Bangor Daily News previously reported. He was sworn in as a Bucksport sergeant that September.
