STONINGTON – Come to the Stonington Opera House for a night of Halloween music and fun from the Celtic Isles at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30.
Scottish fiddler Louise Bichan is joined by guitarist Conor Hearn, mandolinist Ethan Setiawan and cellist Brendan Hearn playing music from their brand new record “Binnorie” featuring Samhaim (Halloween) traditions, folk tales and songs of trowies, sea serpents and selkies.
Bichan is a Maine-based musician and photographer who uses both mediums to tell stories old and new. Growing up in the remote but culturally rich Orkney islands, a place where creativity abounds and playing music has been a part of the social fabric for centuries, gave Bichan a solid grounding in music. Her music is thoughtful, complex, curious and playful. She composes in response to her roots and the world around her; weaving through stories of connection to people, nature, the past and the possibility of the future.
Bichan returned to her Scottish roots to collect material for “Binnorie” stating, “I had a lot of fun pulling together a collection of music and folk tales, some I’ve grown up hearing and playing, some that I’ve written, and some which are new to me.”
Come to the Opera House for All Hallows’ Eve disguised in your best costume and bring your most frighteningly carved neep (turnip) or pumpkin to win a prize! Candles for your Jack-O-Lanterns will be available. Children are welcome, but a few songs will include dark themes, such as murder ballads.
All Hallows’ Eve is part of the Live! for $5 series, offering tickets at only $5 per person. Hancock County students attend all live performances for free. To purchase tickets or for more information call 207-367-2788 or visit operahousearts.org.
