The clock tower above Rumford’s historic town hall was hit by gunfire this month.

The municipal building is home to the police department, an Oxford County Sheriff’s Office substation, judicial and government offices.

Officers heard gunfire, and something hitting the municipal building, about 8:42 p.m. on Oct. 10, according to the Rumford Police Department.

As officers investigated, more gunfire was reported near the intersection of Waldo Street and Rumford Avenue. More gunfire was reported in that neighborhood the next day and again on Oct. 14.

Police executed a search warrant at a Waldo Street residence on Oct. 20 as part of an investigation into drug and gun crimes. Two people were stabbed near that residence Sunday.

As of Wednesday, three people have been arrested in connection with the criminal activity in the Waldo Street neighborhood.

Police on Wednesday used a crane to inspect the apparent gunfire damage to the clock tower and to allow for repairs to prevent additional damage to the historic building.

The crimes remain under investigation.

“Let me be clear: Enough is enough,” Police Chief Tony Milligan, a lifelong Rumford resident, said in a Wednesday statement. “We will not allow the reckless and dangerous actions of a few individuals to define our community or undermine the quality of life our residents deserve. Rumford is a good community filled with good people, and we intend to do everything within our lawful authority to keep it that way.”
