An 81-year-old Massachusetts woman died in a crash on the Maine Turnpike on Monday afternoon.

Janice Goldsmith of Needham, Massachusetts, died at the scene of the crash that occurred around 3:14 p.m. Monday, according to Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss.

Officials believe that Goldsmith crashed into the back of a tractor trailer that had parked in the breakdown lane to address issues with the vehicle. The tractor trailer driver had placed reflective triangles near the vehicle parked in the breakdown lane to alert other drivers.

Southbound traffic was impacted for around five hours Monday evening.

The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
