As many as 30 people were displaced Friday night after a fire broke out at Bangor Efficiency Apartments on Hammond Street.

Firefighters responded to 513 Hammond St. at 10:01 p.m. and found fire showing from a second-floor apartment.

The call was quickly upgraded to a second alarm due to the bitter cold temperatures.

Bangor Assistant Fire Chief Chandler Corriveau said crews had water on the fire by 10:08 p.m. and brought it under control by 10:25 p.m..

Four apartments in the complex, which contains more than 40 units, were affected by the blaze. The apartment where the fire originated sustained fire damage, while three others received smoke and water damage.

No injuries were reported, Corriveau said, and between 25 to 30 people were left in need of shelter.

The Red Cross responded to help displaced residents find temporary lodging. The property owner was able to house 17 people elsewhere, Corriveau said.

A city bus was brought to the scene to provide a warming space, and nearby Angelo’s Pizzeria stayed open late to give people a place to shelter from the cold.

Multiple fire and rescue departments assisted Bangor firefighters and provided coverage for the city during the response.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire. Corriveau said the weather did not interfere with firefighting operations.
