Katahdin Kitchen, a modern Indigenous kitchen, announced on social media Monday that its Old Town cafe is closing.

The cafe opened last August and offered a modern Indigenous menu with breakfast and lunch options two days a week. The cafe was in the Old Town Professional Building on Center Street.

It was one of just a handful of restaurants open during the day in downtown Old Town and was notable for offering an Indigenous menu. Two other cafe-style businesses in Old town, Yahweh Cafe and Meme G’s, closed before the end of 2025.

A specific reason for closing the cafe wasn’t said in the announcement, but said it was “fun and exciting to see what space we could curate in the time being there.”

“As a team we felt it wasn’t aligning with the times, we also wanted to take a chance on the location and keep other food options available to the community,” the announcement read.

When the Kitchen opened, co-owner Zack Neptune said part of the reason for the move to Old Town was because of a lack of breakfast and lunch options in the area. Katahdin Kitchen had previously been operating out of the Korean Dad kitchen in Veazie as a pop-up kitchen.

Korean Dad helped Katahdin Kitchen open and sustain its cafe location, but the restaurant will not be returning to the Veazie location either, according to the announcement.

“We plan to be slowing down on all fronts while we focus on a few large events this coming season,” the announcement said.

The owners did not respond to a request for comment about when and where the events will be held.

The revenue from the cafe was being used to build an outdoor kitchen on Indian Island, Neptune said in August. Updates on the outdoor kitchen and future pop-ups will be shared in the spring, the announcement said.
