Things seem to be going south in our splendid little war with Iran. Service people killed, planes shot down, Israel invading Lebanon, oil prices up, tankers avoiding the region, worldwide long-distance air traffic disrupted, stock market down, countries throughout the Middle East attacked.
So much winning, I don’t know if we can stand it. President Donald Trump has apparently gone back to his outer borough New York mob boss roots: a hit job to take out competition in his “territory.” It’s not personal, it’s business.
Except, it’s not. In many ways, we have no one to blame but ourselves. We could see what was happening in the new “Department of War.” We did nothing. We saw the illegal blowing up of vessels and killings in the Caribbean. We did nothing. We saw the illegal invasion of Venezuela and did nothing. We heard the drum beats about invading Greenland. Pass a war powers resolution? Not our Congress. Didn’t want to hurt Donald’s feelings, it seems. Only the Europeans had the fortitude to say “make my day” and he backed down.
So here we are, wherever that is. Trump says he won’t end the war until his ambitions are met. Unfortunately, he has not fully revealed them to us.
So, like punch drunk fighters, we fight on — with no clear objectives or destinations, essentially rudderless.
