Downeast Ob/Gyn at 12 Stillwater Ave. in Bangor will close in July, the practice announced Friday.
In a message on Facebook, Dr. Christopher Rumsey, who took ownership of the business in 2019, said many factors contributed to the decision, but the primary reason was an inability to recruit new physicians to the private practice.
“With the recent loss of two physician partners and a midwife, I now find myself on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” Rumsey said. “As much as I wish I could continue, this level of coverage is simply not sustainable long term.”
The practice opened in 1994. The final day of business will be July 2.
Rumsey said he will be joining Women’s Healthcare of Maine at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Two other certified family nurse practitioners “are still determining where their next professional steps will take them,” but both hope to remain in the area and continue to see their patients, he said.
