Youth art wanted for Earth Day Poster Show on Sears Island
We are in search of Earth Day-themed art made by local kids! In honor of Earth Day we are hoping to use the display boards along the Homestead Trail on Sears Island to showcase youth art inspired by nature, conservation, and love for mother earth.
Preschoolers up through teens are invited to submit a drawing, painting, or collage tied into the theme of celebrating Earth Day (it just needs to be flat to fit in our displays, and size cannot exceed 16″x 20″). Free poster-sized card stock is available at Carver Memorial Library, and finished pieces should also be dropped off at the main desk at Carver Library by April 15. Artwork will be installed on Sears Island for the second half of April. For more information, email outreach@friendsofsearsisland.org.
Volunteers needed for Spring Clean-up Day on Sears Island
We are looking for volunteers willing to help us do a spring cleanup of Sears Island on the morning of Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers would be helping with cutting back brush, removing fallen trees and picking up trash along the shoreline. The rain date for this event is the following Saturday, April 25. If you are interested in helping us with some island stewardship we would be most grateful!

Earth Day Activity Kits
Friends of Sears Island is putting together free Earth Day themed activity kits for kids that will be available for families to pick up at Carver Memorial Library beginning Saturday, April 18. Our spring activity kits will come in a special reusable earth-shaped bag and will include sunflower seeds, soil, and recycled newspapers, with instructions for creating paper pots for seed starting. Recipients will also find a Signs of Spring Scavenger Hunt in their bag, in addition to handouts with suggestions of meaningful actions kids can take in honor of Earth Day. Lastly, the bags will each contain a small earth pin to acknowledge the efforts of these young stewards!
The kits are intended for children ages 5-12. Donations to Friends of Sears Island are always gratefully accepted to allow the organization to continue to offer programming to all at no cost. Activity kit quantities are limited and will be distributed to families on a first-come, first-served basis.
Pre-registration is no longer required to receive a kit- simply stop by Carver Memorial Library in Searsport when they are open (beginning April 18) and request a kit for your child while supplies last!
Friends of Sears Island’s children’s programs and activity kits are sponsored by First National Bank
