A Madison man allegedly burglarized his local middle school this week.

Adam Nichols, 30, has been charged with burglary, aggravated criminal mischief and theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, according to Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster.

The school resource officer discovered evidence of a burglary at Madison Middle School on Main Street on Tuesday morning.

Nichols allegedly broke in through a window, causing extensive damage, and made off with several undisclosed items, according to Lancaster.

Just hours after the investigation began, police identified Nichols as the suspect, and when confronted, he reportedly admitted to breaking into the school.

Most of the stolen items have been recovered, Lancaster said, noting Thursday morning that work is ongoing to recover the rest.

The theft charge is a felony because of the value of the stolen items, while the criminal mischief charge is aggravated because of the amount of damage, according to Lancaster.

Nichols was taken to the Somerset County Jail, where his bail was set at $250 and includes the condition that he remain under supervised release. He remained at the jail Thursday, Lancaster said.

He was expected to appear at Somerset County Unified Criminal Court at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 5.
