A two-year construction project is still not finished in downtown Bangor, despite city officials saying it would be done by Friday.
Renovations to Pickering Square were supposed to be complete on Friday, but piles of concrete pavers and orange fencing still remain, a Bangor Daily News reporter saw Saturday.
In mid-June the city said the work would take two weeks to finish. Work has been done, but it is not complete. The project is expected to cost about $1 million, according to the city of Bangor.
In-ground lighting is partially installed, with about half of the lines incomplete, the BDN saw. A trellis and two covered swinging benches are also some of the main components that are incomplete.
Construction started in July 2024 to turn the empty, unpaved lot into a grassy space with a brick sidewalk. The majority of the work was done in fall 2025, but two areas remain fenced off as that work is not done.
Art panels and informational kiosks are also supposed to be installed, and the bare earth areas will be seeded once work is complete, the city previously said.
The benches were delayed last year because of a manufacturer recall. Replacements for the in-ground lighting also had to be ordered last year because of a manufacturing defect.
