While I have the utmost respect for William Cohen as a politician, was an ardent supporter of him while he was in the U.S. House and Senate, and was his classmate at Bowdoin College, I disagree with his thesis in his recent column in the BDN, which is that replacing Sen. Susan Collins “would be bad for Maine.” Rather, I believe Maine voters would make a major mistake in reelecting Collins. I think the best thing Maine voters can do is to elect Troy Jackson, and deny Collins yet another six-year term.
I admit that the senator has voted against President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda slightly more than her Republican colleagues. However, 90% of the time in Trump’s first term, and 92% during his current administration, Collins has supported the president’s disastrous agenda. I ask: How can this be good for Mainers?
This is a critical election, and the Democrats have a very good chance to regain control of the Senate, and rein in the president’s destructive legislation. With several key senatorial races up for grabs, a Jackson victory at the polls is very critical for the Democratic Party to gain control of the Senate.
Unfortunately, Collins and the Republican Senate majority have generally lacked the conscience and fortitude to oppose and defeat Trump’s legislative proposals. The time for change is now. Elect Troy Jackson for U.S. Senate.
